Reel Spot Recommendation: The ‘Adventureland’ soundtrack

Whether or not you’re a fan of the movie, you will not be able to resist keeping its soundtrack on repeat for years to come.

Adventureland is a quirky movie that was released in 2009 yet takes place in 1987. The humor is subtle and the story is surprisingly poignant, highlighting great performances from Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Martin Starr and Jesse Eisenberg. The movie follows a recent college graduate, James (Eisenberg), who, due to being financially strapped, is forced to take a summer job at an amusement park before starting journalism school. In a predictable coming-of-age-tale fashion, James soon begins to realize he may not really be meant for the path he’s chosen for himself, and makes a bold move to pursue what he loves instead of what he thinks he’s supposed to love.

The music of the film perfectly complements each moment, and is a fantastic collection of conventional and unconventional ’80s tunes. I’m no die-hard music enthusiast, but this soundtrack is a great mix of upbeat and “bummer songs” (as James calls them) for when you’re up and when you’re down. There are more songs in the film than on the soundtrack, so I encourage you to check out a list of them (and where they play in the film) at ReelSoundtrack, as well.
