There has been a Hobbit trailer in circulation for months now, but today we get a new look at the film – and there is quite a lot to see!
If you’ve been to any action movies in the year 2012, you have certainly encountered the trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Although the trailer is exquisite and haunting, it was getting a bit old – I practically memorized the thing (maybe I go to the movies too much…).
However, three months from its theatrical debut, Warner Bros. released a brand new look at the film with this spectacular trailer you can view below:
Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, The Hobbit, this film precedes the Lord of the Rings trilogy directed also by Peter Jackson. Here is the synopsis below, via IMDb:
Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the wild; through treacherous lands swarming with goblins and orcs, deadly wargs and giant spiders, shapeshifters and sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities…
The tone of this trailer certainly differs from the previous one, as it is more jovial and lighthearted compared to the ominous song the dwarves sing in the initial trailer. If you’ve read the book, you already know that Bilbo’s story is quite different from Frodo’s, not really possessing the darkness that casts a shadow throughout The Lord of the Rings. However, there does seem to be a little of both in these trailers we’ve seen.
Whether that’s your cup of tea or not, you have to admit that it gets you excited to see the first in the Hobbit trilogy! This trailer offers a lot of introduction to the story, while the first trailer was more moody and filled with iconic imagery.I’m thrilled to finally journey back to Middle-earth in the capable hands of this film’s experienced cast and crew, and urge you to check it out even if you are turned off by words like “goblins,” “dwarves” and “wizards.” The Tolkien fantasy feels real under Peter Jackson’s skilled direction.
The film stars Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Richard Armitage (Thorin), Andy Serkis (Gollum), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and many more new and returning actors.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will arrive in theaters on December 14, 2012.
